Dr Gary Shiels
Dr Gary Allen Shiels is a Planner, Urban Designer, and Traffic Engineer with Masters Degrees in Urban Design, Urban Studies and Engineering Science (Transportation Planning). In 2016, Gary completed a PhD with the topic, Planning for Successful Ageing in an Age-Friendly Built Environment. His extensive research into successful ageing, while continuing to manage a thriving planning practice, has seen him keenly pursued to consult on senior housing and age care. His research also identified the many benefits of medium density mixed use development for assisting our ageing population to remain active in the community.
Gary has over 40 years experience in master planning, urban and traffic planning at local, state and federal levels, and is a qualified Local Government Planner in both Queensland and New South Wales. He regularly provides expert evidence in the Land and Environment Court and is a registered mediator. Before becoming a consultant, Gary was Director of Planning and Community Development at Leichhardt Council and Deputy Chief Town Planner at Woollahra Council. He is a Life Fellow and Registered Planner of the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA). Gary has held the positions of President at NSW, National and International levels of PIA. He has continued his commitment to the planning profession and is currently a Vice President of the PIA NSW Committee and is the co-ordinator of the Mentoring Program for Young Planners.
